Background
In 2012, the Centre for Suicide Research initiated the project Prevention of suicidal behaviour - Extension of the Register for Suicide Attempts with the purpose of gradually extend datacolletion to cover nationwide. At present data cover the 2012-2015 in the Region Zealand and North Denmark Region. Data indicate regional variations in attempted suicides.
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to characterize the persons who attempted suicide during 2012-2015 in either the North Denmark Region or Region Zealand in order to targeting the Regions preventive actions. The project examines the variations between the Regions, between the persons who attempted suicide, and between the general populations of the Regions.
Method
Register-based research with data from the Register of Suicide Attempts and Statistics Denmark.
Status
Completed with the Danish report Regionale variationer i selvmordsforsøg 2012-2015.
Financed by
The project was financed by the Ministry for Children and Social Affairs.

[post_content] => Protective and risk factors for suicide and attempted suicide among men aged 40-59 years
Background
For every woman who commit suicide there are three men. From 2003-2013, the suicide rate i Denmark decreased with 28 %. Among men aged 40-59 years the decline is only 7 %. It is important to examine the risk and the protective factors for suicidal behaviour for men aged 40-59 years.
Purpose
The purpose is to examine protective and risk factors for suicide and suicide attempts among men aged 40-59 years.
Method
Questionnairesurvey among men aged 40-59 years.
Status
Completed with Danish report.
Financial support
Supported by the Ministry for Children and Social Affairs.

[post_content] => Background
Eating disorders have become an urgent social problem throughout the last ca. ten years. Much attention has been directed towards these problems and the people who suffer from a serious eating disorder. But we are still deficient in precise knowledge and documentation on the subject.
The hypothesis is that the suicide risk for people suffering from eating disorders is significantly higher than for other people.
Objective
The objective of the research project is to gather documentation regarding eating disorders with the intention to make a targeted effort and obtain a quicker and better effect.
Documentation
- Possible causes for the development of an eating disorder
- Protective factors, including the significance of social network, coping strategies etc.
- Suicide risk for people suffering from eating disorders
In addition to this, operational proposals are sought in preventing eating disorders along with proposals for after-care and rehabilitation.
Method
On the basis of data from the demographic data base and from the register of prevention along with already collected data, characteristics of young people with an eating disorder are analysed. Risk factors are analysed and time- and causal relations are studied.
Suicidal behaviour among children and young people with eating disorders is illustrated by means of the data base RISC and other accessible registers/data bases. It is analysed if the eating disorder increases the probability of a suicide attempt/suicide, and if there is increased probability of a repeated suicide attempt. Equally, an analysis is made of the time interval between discharge from psychiatric department until the suicide attempt occurs, in order to illustrate if there are times when the risk for a suicide attempt is particularly high. Finally, a grouping into age and sex will be made in order to see if eating disorders affect the suicidal behaviour of boys/young men more than that of girls/young women.
Status
The project is completed. The project was financially supported by the Ministry of Social Affairs, now the Ministry of Children, Gender Equality, Integration and Social Affairs.
Contact
The project was carried through by director of Centre for Suicide Research, PhD Lilian Zoellner, lz@cfsmail.dk and statistician Boerge Jensen, Centre for Suicide Research.

[post_content] => Background
In recent years, questions about suicidal behaviour among immigrant women have been raised. So far, there has been very little research in the field. In Denmark, no research has yet uncovered suicidal behaviour among persons of other ethnic background than Danish, classified according to country of origin, descendents, immigrants etc. Based on the above, Centre for Suicide Research has initiated this pilot project.
Objectives
The purpose of the project is to form a basis for a major study of suicidal behaviour among ethnic minorities in the Danish education system.
Definition
Since 2005, ethnic minorities have been defined as immigrants and descendents from Non-western countries. This definition also applies to the Statistics Denmark and the Ministry of Refugee, Immigration and Integration Affairs.
Immigrants
Immigrants are persons born abroad by parents who are foreign citizens or born abroad. If no information is available of one parent, the criteria must be met by the remaining parent.
Descendents
Descendents are persons born in Denmark of parents, of which neither is Danish citizen born in Denmark.
Non-western countries
The Non-western countries are all other countries but the following: the Nordic countries, EU countries, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, and the Vatican City State.
The mother's country of origin is crucial. If the mother is originally from Pakistan and the father from Germany, the person is included in the Non-western group. If, however, the mother is from Germany and the father is from Pakistan the person will be excluded in the Non-western group.
Method
Questionnaires at schools and institutions of education with many or a majority of students of other ethnic background
Status
The project was financially supported by the Ministry of Social Welfare and was completed in 2009.

[post_content] => Protective factors for suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviour
This project is targeted at people whose father, mother, son, daughter, sister, or brother has committed or attempted to commit suicide.
Background
The background for the project is the lack of knowledge about which circumstances that protect close relatives against suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviour.
Purpose
The project's purpose is to examine which circumstances and conditions that protect the next-of-kin against developing suicidal ideation or commit suicide themselves.
Method
Interview with bereaved and next-of-kin.
Status
Completed with a report in Danish.
Financial support
Supported by the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Interior.

[post_content] => Clerical prevention of suicidal behaviour among vulnerable groups
Background
A former study has shown that the clergy is the profession with the least knowledge of suicidal behaviour, the profession that feels most insecure when dealing with suicidal persons, and the profession that most wants to be better at handling and preventing suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviour.
Objective
Due to their work as ministers, pastors, and chaplains, the clergy are often in close contact with those persons at risk of suicidal behaviour. Adolescents, the elderly, bereaved, veteran soldiers, prisoners, and those affected by mental or physical illness are at particular risk of suicidal behaviour.
Step one is updating the existing knowledge of the clergy's attitude towards suicidal behaviour. Results and the ethical considerations will be incorporated in the educational course and the continued professional training, as well as in the pastoral care, conversations with persons in various life situations, and the collegial supervision.
Ethical problems
There are multiple ethical problems associated with suicidal behaviour; among these the right to die vs. the duty to live, the notion of sin, guilt, and shame. The project contributes to the debate over the ethical problems concerning suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviour among bishops, deans, and ministers.
Method
Questionnaire survey and interview study.
Status
Completed March 2017 with report and teaching material for future clergy.
Financial support
The project is financed by the VELUX FOUNDATION.
The VELUX FOUNDATION is a non-profit foundation established in 1981 by Villum Kann Rasmussen, the founder of the VELUX Group and other business enterprises in the VKR Group. In 2013 the VELUX FOUNDATION donated 240 million DKr to various general purposes.

[post_content] => Research into risk and protective factors for suicidal behaviour and other self-harming behaviour among social groups of high suicide risk
Background
Suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviour is often associated with hopelessness, meaninglessness and despair. Some groups are particularly vulnerable:
- Cancer patients
- Adolescents who do not live with family (e.g. placed elsewhere, foster family)
- Young inmates
Suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviour among cancer patients
It is uncertain how many cancer patients suffer from suicidal ideation or how many attempt to commit suicide. Suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviour is often taboo and is seldom addressed in conversations with relations and/or healthcare personnel.
In collaboration with doctors, nurses and other healthcare personnel an interview guide/questionnaire has been made which will illuminate:
- hope, suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviour among cancer patients
- conditions and factors that raise / promote or restrain hope
Adolescents who do not live with family
There is no research that focuses on whether adolescents who do not live with their families are at greater risk of being vulnerable, experience suicidal ideation or suicidal behaviour. The Centre for Suicide Research has gathered 14,000 questionnaires from adolescents in several Danish Regions from 2001 – 2011. In these questionnaires, it is possible to identify adolescents who have been placed in foster care, institutions or similar.
Data-analysis will illuminate:
- vulnerability
- serious thoughts on self-harming behaviour
- self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts
- conditions that protect and prevent thoughts on self-harm and self-harming actions
The objective is to contribute to the instruction of the professionals who work with the adolescents.
Inmates
The Prison and Probation Service reports that inmates belong to a group in high risk of committing suicide. During the last ten years, there has been an average of five completed suicides per year.
The State Prison in Ringe, Funen receives men and women age 14 – 23. Most men are convicted for assault or robbery, while most women are convicted for drug peddling.
With the intent of uncovering and illuminating:
- serious thoughts on self-harming behaviour
- self-harming behaviour and suicidal attempts
- conditions that protect and prevent thoughts on self-harm and self-harming actions
The study will be based on interviews with inmates. Participation is voluntarily. The objective is to create research-based knowledge and to contribute to the instruction of the professionals in the Prison and Probation Service.
Status
The project is completed. Reports are published in Danish and results will be presented at national and international conferences.
The project ´was financially supported by the Ministry of Children, Gender Equality, Integration and Social Affairs.

Background
In 2012, the Centre for Suicide Research completed the project Risk and protective factors for suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviour among Danish veteran soldiers stationed abroad. Results have been presented at various conferences.
In 2014, a continuation of the project is initaited - Again in collaboration with the FSU (Defence Health Service).
Objective
The objective of the project is to uncover if Danish soldiers are at further risk of suicidal behaviour than a comparable cross section of the Danish population.
Method
- Follow-up interviews with participant soldiers from the previous project
- Combination of Register for Suicides, Register for Suicide Attempts and the Danish National Patient Register
Status
Completed December 2014.

[post_content] => Risk and protective factors for suicidal ideation and suicidal behaviour among Danish veteran soldiers stationed abroad
Background
Until now, only sparse and older research concerning suicidal behaviour among Danish soldiers dispatched to Ex-Yugoslavia in the 1990s exists. We lack research-based knowledge about soldiers dispatched to Iraq and Afghanistan. Swedish and Norwegian studies are based on older material; also, they focus on risk factors. The new Danish project includes soldiers who have been dispatched within recent years and who may have been stationed in turbulent zones and experienced hostile activities.
